Washington, D.C.— Late on at night on Sunday, October 1, a gunman opened fire on a massive crowd of people at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, killing at least 50 people and injuring over 400 people. In response, Progressive Congress released the following statement:

“The horrific act of violence that took the lives of people attending a music festival on Sunday is the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Our hearts are with the victims and their families in the wake of this senseless act. Our thoughts are with the wounded who are still being treated. We are grateful to the first responders, police, and members of the public who acted quickly and whose heroic actions saved lives.

As of the time of this statement, police are still investigating after killing the sole suspect.  What we do know is that this mass shooting terrorized the Las Vegas community, and that no thoughts of sympathy or bereavement can bring back the people whose lives were lost or undo the trauma of experiencing gunfire during what was supposed to be a joyful occasion of music and dancing.

49 people died last year at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Our nation reeled from that tragedy, and we came together to mourn and hold each other, stunned by what was then the deadliest shooting in American history. Today, we come together as a nation once again, horrified that that level of violence has been surpassed and that more innocent people’s lives have been taken.  As a nation, we stand with Las Vegas.”
